Artist's Description

Louisville's Whiskey Row apartment building. In 1864, this building was the Galt House Hotel, the most luxurious and famous in the city. On March 9, the new commander of the Army of the Western Theater, General William T Sherman, entered the hotel and went to a room on the second floor. That room was occupied by the man Sherman had just succeeded, General Ulysses Grant. Grant was on his way to Washington to assume his new assignment as General-in-Chief of all Union Armies. But the meeting was about other plans that Grant had for Sherman. On that day in this building, the two men planned Sherman's mission to take the city of Atlanta. He would do so on September 1, 1864 after laying siege to the city for six weeks. The capture of Atlanta directly contributed to the re-election of Abraham Lincoln as president.

I was happy to step in to help where I could and gain valuable experience along...
